Book Club Corner - E.L. James - Fifty Shades of Grey

Hi Guys,

So today I am doing another book review (my fave!!!).

Now this book has received many many reviews, and rightly so. I, myself, was quite hesitant to read it. It just isn't really the kind of book I normally read. And oh boy when the movie was released people just couldn't stop talking about it. So I just had to see for myself what the hype was all about.

The woman in my family all read the book before me and when I asked them to explain what the book was about it just made me even more nervous to read it. It just so wasn't me. It was unlike anything I had ever read or heard about.

So I started reading (with trepidation). And I was PLEASANTLY surprised. There was nothing "low classed" about it. The book was written so tastefully and eloquently. There was nothing pornographic about it. Yes the author goes into alot of explicit detail as to the sexual nature and going on's of  Christian and Ana's sexual relationship but that's what makes it that much more interesting.

It was so engrossing watching an innocent girl find herself and become a woman. It also shows us what great lengths we as woman go to please a man. She tries things she has never even heard of (I was even afraid for her) but evolves and starts to test her own limits. She falls in love with Christian who turns out to be so complicated.

It's a complicated love story. Ana falls for a man that you can only dream about (rich, good looking and intelligent.) But he comes with so much baggage and at the end of the book she realises that the baggage is too much to handle.

E.L. James has one helluva an imagination. How she came up with the "Red Room" and all those toys is beyond me. But cudos to you girl. (The research must've had it's up :) )

I would definitely recommend this book. It is a fun, interesting read and you just will not be able to put it down. And once you get to the end, you will not be able to wait to read the next one. (I just started mine.)

Good job E.L. James we look forward to reading many many more of your books

  1. I heard mix reviews in this book but I can't decide for myself as it is banned here. So getting a copy is difficult.

  2. I haven't read this book mainly because I've been so busy writing/editing my own, but when I said to one of the people at a writing group I attend that The Hen Party (my first novel) contains just a little of what I imagine '50 shades' is like they were disgusted and said they wouldn't buy it then. (They hadn't read 50 shades either!).
Sometimes I think if explicit sexual detail is a necessary part of a story then it should be in there. Books that say things like 'then they closed the bedroom door.....' (followed by a new chapter & different subject area) seem to be missing an essential ingredient of humanity.
Thank you for your blog, I was interested in your comments and good luck to E L James - I think many people are envious of her success. I will get around to reading her book and let you know what I think when I do - but it won't be for a while because my editor has now returned my MS for the very final edits. 1. Once again Hillary thank you for your continued support. I am so glad to hear that you are writing your own novel (can't wait to read it!!). 50 Shade is definitely a misconceived book. I mean the way people tell other people about it just does not give do it just. There is nothing pornographic. But to be honest sex is a very taboo subject. (Funny because it's something everyone will engage in sooner or later in life.) E.L. is a wonderful writer. I started reading 50 Shades Darker and cannot put it down!!!! 50 Shades is a love story and who doesn't love a good love story. Its just more in depth than most and I think people seem to have a problem with that. (Why, I don't know.) Thank you for your comment and re-tweet always appreciated. Good luck finishing your novel. XoXo T
